In 2021, with only 356 barrels and five other stockings, €11,724,700 were raised; and €800,000 was paid for the presidents’ cask, of 228 liters of Corton Grand Cru Renardes. Since 2021 the most expensive piece has been Mazis Chambertain Grand Cru Cuvée Madeleine Collignon.

The head of oenology at the Hospices de Beaune, Ludivine Griveau, explained that “we brought the first wines to the barrel a month after the harvest of the first grapes began, on September 26, and the process ended on the 13 October”. Thus, 802 lots have been presented at the auction: 620 of red wine, pinot noir; and 182 of white wine, chardonnay.

“The 2022 vintage has volume and quality in both red and white. The whites are expressive with very attractive textures. The reds are consistent, show sunny tannins, but taste very fresh. They are the bridges between what we are right now seeing in the cellars and the stages of the life of the vineyard throughout the year”, pointed out Griveau. The oenologist has also announced that they have been transitioning to organic production for two years and that they hope to reach the end of this process in 2024.

Tribut a Louis-Fabrice Latour i benefici per entitats de suport a la infància

Every year the organization donates the proceeds of one of its barrels, in some editions there have been two, to some charitable causes and this year it has committed to supporting children. The so-called Presidents’ piece, a wine cask from a Corton grand cru, has paid tribute to dealer Louis-Fabrice Latour of Maison Louis Latour, a prominent figure in Burgundy and a staunch supporter of the auction who died in September. The two beneficiary organizations have been the Princesse Margot association founded in 2012, which supports children with cancer, and the World Vision organization, whose mission is to help the most vulnerable children. Flavie Flament, journalist and writer and Benoit Magimel, actor, presided over the sale of the Pièce des Présidents at the Halles de Beaune.

Els Hospices de Beaune, sis segles d’història

The Hospices de Beaune have their origins in a charity hospital, the Hôtel-Dieu, which was built in this town on the Burgundian Côte d’Or in 1443 with the support of Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy, and Guigone de Salins his wife. Over time, the institution accumulated vines donated by families in the area in support of the hospital’s work.

At present the organization of the Civil Hospices of Beaune includes the hospital centers of Beaune, Arnay-le-Duc, Seurre and Nuits-St-Georges. Just as it maintains the historic building of the Hôtel-Dieu from the 15th century, now a tourist attraction and center for all kinds of cultural events; and a cellar with sixty hectares of vines that make up the Domaine des Hospices de Beaune.

The production of this unique winery is auctioned every year on the third Sunday of November, when its wines are new. From their sale, the buyer has until the end of the year to collect their barrels and take care of their ageing, bottling and marketing.
